Exposure trip to Dzukou valley

To provide students a chance for socialize and build relationships, learn in an outdoor environment, take a break from the stress of class room and create memories of college days, the history department under the guidance of HOD Sir Tumben Ngullie Asst. Professor and Miss Gwasole Tep Asst. Professor took the students to the scenic beauty of Dzukou valley on 6/9/2018 and 7/9/2018 with 6th semester honors students. Dzukou valley is the homeland of several rare and endangered species of flora and fauna including the state bird of Nagaland Trogapan. Trip to Dzukou valley reminded about our rich natural heritage and our responsibility in preserving our mother earth.

 

History department field trip

Department of history, oriental college kohima organized a field trip to Khonoma village under kohima district under the guidance of the HOD Sir Tumben Ngullie and Miss Gwasole Tep with fifty (50) students (including students from other department) on   15/2/ 2019. Khonoma is often described as a warrior village and it is known for its fierce resistance during the British colonial period. Khonoma is also known for Asia’s first Green village and eco tourism. The department choosed Khonoma for educational trip because it is part of the syllabus. During the trip, Mr Avibu was the tour guide. Khonoma Morungs, Naga paintings, burials and graves, traditional homes, Khonoma village common assembly ground known as Khwehou and forts etc were the places visited.

 

Department recreation

History department Oriental college organized a department recreation on 1/2/2020 at Dzulakie with great enthusiasm and merriment. A student needs rest and entertainment after working hard for many days. Picnic can provide them with solace and help them from an escape route from the monotonous schedule of their academic activities. All together 30 (thirty) students with 3 (three) teachers were part of the department recreations where many activities like games, singing, dancing etc were conducted and the students enjoyed a lot. Department picnic build closer bonds with classmates, experience new environment, gain exposure and enjoy away from the classroom learning.

 

Oriental college history department annual meeting

Starting from the year 2022, the department of history Oriental college conduct annual general meeting with the students on every first week of August (any convenient day). The meeting highlights on the various agendas like departmental field trip, study tours, departmental activities, update and progress of history students and also highlights on financial position of the department in addition to membership fees. Students and teachers share their ideas and thoughts on the progress and growth of the department.

 

Folk song competition

Heritage is the legacy of the past, what we live with today and what we passed on to future generations. Heritage is something that can be preserved, conserved and it has cultural or historical value. To preserved and protect our heritage, a folk song competition was organized by history department on 29/7/2022 where students from different department participated. Various folk songs in Garo, Ao Naga, Angami Naga were presented. Through this presentation students were reminded about the cultural diversity and about their own culture and identity. It also enables to develop awareness about ourselves. “Why we are the way we are”.

CAREER GUIDANCE AND MOTIVATIONAL MEET ORGANIZED FOR BA 6TH SEMESTER STUDENTS

A career guidance and motivational meet was organized by History Department for BA 6th semester students on 16th March 2022. A total of 70 students attended the program. The resource person was Yanpvuo Kikon, Tech consultant and Entreprenur. Mr.Kikon highlighted the students on career prospects and how with skills and degree the graduate student has ample of job opportunity. He encouraged and motivated the students to discover their capabilities and work on their skills and not rely merely on degree certificate. The talk was informative, practical and relevant to the students. The main aim of the talk was to push the students of the limits, broaden their knowledge and not just confined to classroom learning, develop critical thinking, stayed informative and updated with recent news around the world. Besides learning to be smart and wise in applying their skills and knowledge.

 

Launching of department Logo and T- shirt

The department come up with the department T-shirt under the supervision of Ms Visanuo and Mr Dajonpa on 23rd November 2022. The history department also designed its logo and officially launched on the same day.

 

EXPOSURE TRIP TO KNONOMA AND DZULIKIE  2023

The History Department, Oriental College Kohima went on  a field trip cum outing to Khonoma and Dzulikie on 22nd April 2023. The trip was participated by 27 students. Three faculties of the Department, Mr Tumben Ngullie, Miss Gwasole Tep and Miss Aboli Chikhe accompanied the students for the trip.

The Major activities of the trip was a visit to some historical significant places such as the White Pillar in the village that commemorates Sub Major Nubir Sai and G H Damant, Lieutenant H H Forbes and Major C R, the Kuda fFort of the village which literally means place of defence, the Angami Naga Morung which preserves centuries old Naga sleeping-bed, log drums, wooden plates, spoons and baskets.

Native of the village Viphenyii Meyase was the tour guide.

The visit to Dzulikie about 10 kms from Khonoma was a delight. Dzulikie had been named after its river Dzulikie and has gorgeous flora and fauna.

Khonoma village is an excellent place for eco-tourism that holds camps, tracks, and outdoor activities frequently. Visiting Khonoma and Dzulikie is an experience worth remembering and it counts as one of those tribal travel journeys.

 

DEBATE AND QUIZ COMPETITION

History Department for the first time organized Debate and Quiz competition. Which hence forth will be Department annual event. The competition was held on 4th September 2023 at College Auditorium. Seven Department participated – History Department, Political science Department, Economics Department, Education Department, Tenyidie Department, English Department and Commerce Department. The main aim of the debate and quiz competition is to instill competitive spirit among the students, keep them updated and relevant, provide platform to the students, encourage students to look beyond their textual knowledge and also challenge their oratory skills.

All the History students of all the semester and students from each department attended the event. The first session with Debate was followed by second session with Quiz Competition and the Valedictory program. A total of fourteen students participated with two student participant from each department for the the Debate. A total of fourteen students participated with two participants from each department for the Quiz Competition as well. The judges of the Debate were Dr Kevizakilie Suokhrie, Miss Mhabeni Kikon and Miss Limanaro Walling with Mr Tumben Ngullie as the moderator. Miss Aboli Chikhe was the Quiz Master of the Quiz Competition.   The entire competition was successful with active participation of the students from all the departments.

The Topic of the Debate Competition was National Education Policy 2020. Boon or Bane.

The Quiz Competition covered general knowledge on State, National and International.
