Departmental Activities:
Apart from the regular programs/courses, the English Department Oriental College, also provides mentoring to the students both in and beyond the classroom in a variety of forums and themes which make up our calendar.
Orientation Programme for 1st Semester English Honours students as well as Farewell for Outgoing Honours students are also organised every year.
Exhibition cum Workshop held at The Highland Institute on the 2nd of May 2022
The faculty along with the English Major students visited the Exhibition cum Workshop held at The Highland Institute on the 2nd of May 2022. The exhibition was on Naga Ancestral Voices; Songs, Stories and beliefs. It showcased the recordings, notes made by anthropologist and Civil servant J.H Hutton. They are the first recorded voices and written history of the Nagas.
“A unique exhibition which broadened my perspective and understanding about the pristine beauty of our ancestor’s way of life, humbled and appreciated how others have taken the time, effort, to preserve and their means of passing down to us our history, helping to keep our past alive and thriving.
Our history, our culture might be a project for many but for us Nagas it is our essence, our identity, the beauty that unites and binds us as one beyond our tribe.”

Angami Naga Folktale Comes to Life: ‘Mehouviü and Morüsa’ Stuns at International Conference
The English Department in collaboration with The Drama Club also staged a play on the 2nd of September 2022 based on an Angami Naga Folktale “Mehouviü and Morüsa” a tragedy.
The drama“Mehouviü and Morüsa” a tragedy, was also screened and secured 2nd position at the two-day International Conference on Learning Language & Literature for Life, organised by Department of English (UAP) National College (Autonomous) Tiruchirappalli.
Exploring Naga Literary Heritage: Insights from Lecture Series on Naga Writing in English
On the 19th of September’22 the faculty of English Department along with students from 1st and 3rd Semester English Honours attended a lecture series on “Naga writing in English.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Sentinaro (HOD, Department of English, Baptist College Kohima) on the topic “Development of Naga literature: An Overview”, followed by Dr. Vizovono Elizabeth (Independent Researcher and Freelance editor) on the topic “Our History through Our Stories”
Sports week 2022 saw the English Honours students; 1st semester & 3rd Semesters opening a stall for fund raise
Celebrating Literature: College Literary Event Highlights Talent in Poetry and Debate
The English Department in collaboration with Smart City Development Limited Kohima organised a Literary Event on 17th March ‘23 at the college where students participated in Poetry writing and debate competition. Mr. Menuotuolie James of B.A 5th semester English Honours was awarded the 1st prize, Ms. Muyolu of B.A 6th semester English Honours bagged the 2nd prize in the poetry writing competition.
On 25th March 2023, along with 4 teachers, 25 students of English Department went for a field trip and picnic to khonoma village and Dzulekie.
Raising Awareness: Play Addressing Child Labour Staged at Oriental College Kohima
On 12th of June 2023,World Day against Child Labour,English Department and The Drama Club of Oriental College Kohima in collaboration with Child Helpline Kohima staged a play addressing child labour and abuse against children titled My Next Door Neighbour, which was scripted by members of the Drama Club.
Oriental College Represents at 2023 Literature Fest: Achievements and Workshops
One Assistant Professor along with eight student from the department attended the 2023 LITERATURE FEST of Baptist College Kohima on 27th October 2023. Menuotuolie James Yhome of 5th Semester Oriental College was awarded the 2nd position in the Poetry writing competition, while Kevikhrunu and Laisang from 5th semester attended the Creative Writing Workshop.
Oriental College Engages at Book Launch: Discourses on Cultural Heritage in Nagaland
On 6th of September ,2023, the English Department of Oriental College Kohima attended a book launch at Baptist College Kohima. The book, Discourses on Cultural Heritage in Contemporary Nagaland was edited by Dr. Sentinaro, SeyiesilieVüprü, Süvilü Venuh and Asola C. Jamir and published by Pen thrill Publication.Two students from 5th semester and two Assistant Professor from the department attended the program.
World Poetry Day Celebration: ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ at Oriental College Kohima
Along with the rest of the world, Oriental College Kohima also celebrated World Poetry Day on 21st of March 2024 under the theme “Standing on the shoulders of giants”. The program was organised by the Department of English, Oriental College Kohima.
Exploring History and Nature: English Department Field Trip to Pulie Badze & Jotsoma Memorial
Twenty-two students from the English Department, along with three Assistant Professors embarked on a one-day Departmental Field Trip to Pulie Badze & 2nd World War Japanese memorial site, Jotsoma on the 13th of April 2024. The objective of the field trip was to raise the students’ awareness of the significance of the 2nd World War Japanese Memorial at Kiherii Jotsoma, as well as to appreciate the rich flora and fauna and the pristine, preserved forest while trekking to Pulie Badze.
