A BRIEF REPORT ON KHONOMA
Khonoma is situated 20 km west of Kohima. Khonoma is renowned for its effort to conserve the biodiversity . Khonoma is known as the first “Green Village” in Asia. Khonoma is a biodiversity hotspot and has rich flora and fauna.
Khonoma is one of the most visited places in Nagaland. The people of Khonoma avoid the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers and instead they use organic manure which is actively sourced from composting that is done using kitchen waste.
The freedom struggle touches Nagaland and Khonoma is a living example of the struggle for freedom, survival and territorial unity.
KHONOMA MORUNG
Khonoma’s Village architecture is largely preserved even today. A MORUNG is a common feature in Nagaland.
Traditionally it was used as an educational institution for youths. In the Morung, they learnt about their culture ,customs and underwent training in warfare, martial arts and craftsmanship. They also bonded over folkloric traditions such as songs and native games.
However today, it is used to display various handicrafts, art and weapons used in battles.
The one prime thing in the village is the cleanliness of the village. Nature has gifted this village with such lush green abundance that no material riches can ever match it.
CONCLUSION
The green village initiative was firstly taken by indigenous inhabitants of Khonoma and was further supported by the government. Thus, Khonoma became the first Green Village in Asia. Thus, there is a need to distribute the benefits among the stakeholders so that the conservation activities can be promoted by everyone.
